$138 A Week For Groceries - On Friendship & Day 21 Meals (Friday)

"A friend is one to whom one may pour out the contents of one's heart, chaff and grain together, knowing that gentle hands will take and sift it, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness, blow the rest away."

~ George Eliot

On Friday, I went to the San Diego Beerfest with Marcy, and we had a blast as we always do.

It's a given that friends will share certain commonalities, and those are things that bring us together. What keeps us together, among other things, is the knowledge that we can trust them with the uglier, rougher, less polished version of ourselves than the one we should share with the rest of the world most of the time, for perfectly good reasons.

We need true confidantes in our lives to whom we can express our unfiltered, unvarnished thoughts - our harsh judgments, our prejudices, our fears and insecurities, our inconsistencies, our bitchiness and dickishness - and trust that they will not do worse with them than to understand and accept them as part of us and even try to love them, celebrate them, and laugh at them in some beautifully twisted way whenever possible as only friends can and will. All the better done under the influence of a shared and delightful liquid grain buzz. ;)

I have but a (very) few such friends in my life. Marcy is one of them.

We were not buzzed in this pic.

We might have been here, but it wasn't nearly as bad
(or good) as it looks.
We are respectable broads.

Cheers to you, chica.

And on to the meals. As always, I've included a meal total and per serving total on the blog. The detailed ingredient cost breakdown HERE. As a reminder, the cost of dishes are completely accounted for on the day they are first made or eaten, whichever the later. As such, leftovers are considered freebies.

Breakfast

Izz and I had a half PB&J each, and Izz also had a banana. These days, weekday breakfast is mostly just a thing to jumpstart my system and get a little food in my belly so my tummy doesn't grumble from hunger or ulcerate from coffee. :P

The boys had a bowl of cereal each.

BREAKFAST TOTAL (2 adults, 1 teen, 1 toddler): $1.89

Lunch

For Dean, more of that tritip and mashed potatoes and a couple of those teeny tiny apples from Trader Joe's. Joey took his usual juice pouch and apple and then came home starving and had a bowl of cereal.

For me, the last serving of that panfried catfish with the Mediterranean veg melange.

Izz had some warm steamed rice in water (it's a Korean thing) and a handful of green olives. She loves olives.

Later in the afternoon, I boiled a little pork shoulder to snack on with some kimchi on the side (a favorite flavor combo of Koreans everywhere). Joey shared with me, and Izz had a couple of pieces of pork as well.

I set aside an equal amount for Mads so she could have some with rice for dinner later when her dad dropped her off. This is one of her favorites also. The pork with kimchi genes run strong on my side of the family. ;)

LUNCH TOTAL (2 adults, 1 teen, 1 toddler): $5.32

Dinner

I plated up dinner for the boys before I headed out. The very last of that tritip with the last of the leftover steamed rice and the last of the pineapple and blueberries divided into two decent sized portions.

Dean shared his dinner with Izz.

I called Mads to make sure she knew dinner was waiting for her, and she was stoked because she apparently didn't feel like having McDonald's, which was her dinner option earlier in the evening.

I shared some woodfired snausage pizza and tritip and pulled pork sandwiches at the beerfest with Marcy, but that goes on the Entertainment tab. :)

DINNER TOTAL (1 adult, 2 teens, 1 toddler): $1.75

MEALS DAY 21 TOTAL: $8.96

As you can see, it pays to love your leftovers. ;)

And now I'm only 1 shopping trip and 3 days of meals behind. This wrist brace helps a lot.

Hopefully I'll get even more caught up later today, but I won't sweat it if I can't. Thanks for your patience and understanding. :)
