$138 A Week For Groceries - A Clarification & Days 16 and 17 Meals (Sunday & Monday)

Yesterday, I wrote this about a chaotic shopping experience I recently had at Trader Joe's, attributing much of that chaos to mommies with inappropriately unruly young children. That inspired a comment from someone that, as a stay at home mom, she found the post "offensive, stuck up, and uneducated."

A highlight of last weekend's meals - Dean's smoked pork ribs. :)

I'm not sure how coming from a stay at home mom makes that statement any more qualified than it would otherwise be, and a big part of me is loath to even address this because I think a reasonably careful and thorough reading of the post - certainly not required or expected but something a person should probably do before making such a comment - would result in a different conclusion than that I think mommies, whether they stay at home or not, should not go grocery shopping with their young children. (I am a mom who goes grocery shopping with her young child now and who used to go grocery shopping with my two older children when they were little, after all.)

Also because being occasionally misunderstood comes with the territory of public blogging, and I've learned to accept not only that it's going to happen but that I just can't address all (or even most) instances to my satisfaction.

But as a parent and advocate for family involvement in meal preparation, and even just as a decent human being, it bothers me just a little bit extra that anyone might think I think mothers and their young children shouldn't go grocery shopping together. Generally speaking, OF COURSE WE SHOULD.

However, coming from that same perspective, while I think the village should be reasonably patient with and understanding of children through their different developmental phases and the challenges parents face as a result, I also think that we parents would do well not to unduly try that patience if we can help it.

I hope that's clear enough.

And if the beef actually happens to be something else altogether, I'm ok with letting whatever that might be go unaddressed.

SUNDAY

Breakfast

Joey had a bowl of melon. He loves melon. And then about an hour later, because he was still hungry, he had a bown of ramen.

Mads also had a bowl of ramen. As some of you already know, this is her weekend morning ritual unless I make family breakfast - a bowl of ramen with the pho treatment (green onions, cilantro, lime, sriracha), and cartoons. This was all that was left by the time I thought to take a pic.

Dean and I had some more of the leftover Panfried Catfish and Grits from last week.

And Izz had a banana, some of Joey's melon, a small handful of Chedder Rockets, and milk.

BREAKFAST TOTAL (2 adults, 2 teens, 1 toddler): $3.29

Lunch

As Dean's been promising the kids for weeks, a rack of smoked pork spareribs with Dean's rub and a sauce I concocted of the leftover quick Vietnamese Summer Roll sauce we usually made (hoisin, sriracha, lime juice, chopped onion), some leftover Korean Style Chili Garlic Soy Dipping Sauce, ketchup, molasses, and some chopped green onion and cilantro.

On the side, a slightly creamy version of Joey's Favorite Crunchy Soy Slaw. Just add another 1/2 Tablespoon or so or white vinegar, and 3 Tablespoons of mayo. That was a yummy twist. I think we'll do it again.

Izz had a few bites of the pork and some blueberries.

LUNCH TOTAL: $15.52

COST FOR 6 SERVINGS RIBS & SLAW: $15.02
COST PER SERVING: $2.50

Dinner

Dean and I were too full from lunch to eat a full dinner, so we snacked on some of those TJ's root vegetable chips and some dark chocolate sea salt almonds (also from TJ's) that our friend gave those. Those are yummy.

Joey and Maddie had two hot dogs each and a fruit bowl with melon and blueberries. Joey had a tall glass of milk as well.

Izz ate some blueberries, yet more Cheddar Rockets (she really loves those things), and had some milk.

Oh, and I also ate the leftover slaw from lunch at night and Joey ended up eating the last of the melon as well.

DINNER TOTAL (2 teens, 1 toddler, snacks for adults): $5.53

MEALS DAY 16 TOTAL: $24.34

As a reminder, Mads returns to Stepford for the school week.

MONDAY

Breakfast

I had a half PB&J, Dean had a bowl of cereal, and Joey had a bowl of cereal with melon. That kid loves melon. Coffee for all three of us. Aaand we're almost out of coffee for the week because, if you recall, I forgot to buy some.

Izz is starting to get her appetite back, and she had a banana, followed by yet MORE Cheddar Rockets, followed by a big bowl of blueberries, followed by a little handful of cereal.

BREAKFAST TOTAL (1 adults, 1 teen, 1 toddler): $4.01

Lunch

For Dean, about 2/3 of the last Vietnamese Grilled Porkchop from last week and a fried egg with furikake over steamed rice. 4 Famous Amos Cookies, and an apple. Since I steamed 2 cups of rice, we'll have plenty left over for that Kimchi Fried Rice I plan to make later in the week.

For me, the very last of the fried catfish and grits from last week.

Izz had some of my catfish, more blueberries, a half PB&J, and a half banana.

Joey's still on his juice pouch and apple kick.

I got hungry in the afternoon and ended up finishing her banana and eating that last little bit of Vietnamese Grilled Porkchop with lots of sriracha.

LUNCH TOTAL (2 adults, 1 teen, 1 toddler): $3.04

Dinner

was spaghetti with that Slow Cooker Tomato Pasta Sauce with Snausage that I made on Sunday...

...and a garden salad for which Joey made a yummy Balsamic vinaigrette.

Izz had spaghetti with us. She loves spaghetti. Go figure. ;)

And since it's my schnacky week, I had a handful of those root veg chips and a few of those chocolate almonds while sitting on the couch and trying to beat this week's Bejeweled Blitz high score. Dean had some of those almonds, too.

And I'm pretty sure I remember Izz throwing a fit for another chocolate almond in my granny nap induced haze...

DINNER TOTAL (2 adults, 1 teen, 1 toddler): $10.40

COST FOR 6 SERVINGS SPAGHETTI WITH SALAD: $9.75
COST PER SERVING: $1.63

MEALS DAY 17 TOTAL: $17.45

The heat wave continues here. Time to tend the garden and lock down the house before it sets in. Slow Cooker Spaghetti Sauce with Snausage recipe coming up in a bit. :)
