$138 A Week For Groceries - About Date Day, Day 15 Meals (Saturday) & Portion Sizes
Because Shopping Day posts always take a little extra time to put together, I'm just going to get completely caught up on meal posts to give myself some wiggle room on the shopping post.
Luckily, Saturdays are usually our dining out indulgence days, and there's not much to account for in terms of home-prepared meals. Yesterday was no exception. Dean and I had our first meal out alone in almost 8 months, and the kids enjoyed takeout sushi at home with LAM and MAP.
That was a treat. Probably even more so because it's been EIGHT. FUCKING. MONTHS.
To everything turn, turn... There will be a day when it's all me and Dean all the time, and many days in between when it's a better balanced situation than the one we have now. It's good to step back and see the big picture from time to time.
Breakfast
I had a half PB&J, and the boys finished off the last of last week's box of Honey Bunches of Oats. All three of us had coffee as usual.
Mads had scrambled eggs with rice and kimchi. Among the ways in which she's like me is that anything goes for breakfast when we're in the mood for it. We don't really have strict notions of food/time-of-day pairings.
Izz had a slice of toast with butter and jam and her milk as usual.
BREAKFAST TOTAL (2 adults, 2 teens, 1 toddler): $4.33
Lunch
As stated before, we all ended up having sushi. Dean and I on the Entertainment tab, the kids on the LAM and MAP tab, neither of which count for this budget. ;)
Mads did have a couple of Asian pears for snacks after lunch.
LUNCH TOTAL: $0.60
Dinner
Dean and I were so full from lunch (we also stopped for a piece of pie each on the way home from lunch) that we didn't eat anything.
Mads decided to make herself some ramen with the usual pho treatment of lime, green onions, cilantro, and sriracha...
...and Joey had some melon and a small salad dressed with his improvised dressing of leftover ponzu from their afternoon sushi order, some teriyaki sauce from the same, and a squeeze of lime. Makes me happy that he's learning to put leftovers to good use. :)
I'm guessing Joey's eating habits of late are at least in some part responsible for this reader comment, but while his eating habits aren't that typical of an American teenager these days (which is probably more a good than bad thing), what is typical is the kind of teenaged soul searching that's driving it.
It's not uncommon for kids to begin to express themselves in any number of ways in this phase in their lives, diet included. Joey's taken quite a keen interest in health, fitness, and diet these days, and we've had lots of interesting conversations about the new science, technology, and mythology behind so many of our current thoughts and beliefs on nutrition.
As extraordinary as his diet seems at the moment, he is not unhealthy at all and is in quite enviable shape while developing a thoughtful - and hopefully ultimately reasonable - approach to eating. I can't judge or complain.
And as I've said before, I could take a cue from him on quantity, seeing as I'm a muffin topped, chicken winged, and cottage cheese thighed 41 year old woman (a healthy one, albeit) whose idea of working out these days is slinging a 2 year old on my hip and maybe also pruning vines at the same time when I want to get real intense about it. ;)
Izz had the last of last week's goldfish crackers, some of Joey's melon, and her milk. She's just not that hungry this week. I don't blame her. It's hot, and she's teething.
Everyone had some Famous Amos cookies while watching movies.
DINNER TOTAL (2 teens, 1 toddler): $3.49
MEALS DAY 15 TOTAL: $8.42
It's a bazillion degrees outside as I write this. Can't wait for Summer to go somewhere.
