How to claim a tax refund at the airport
Who doesn't like to save money when they shop? You might wonder if tax refunds are actually worth the hassle, but even if you don’t make any expensive luxurious purchases, small purchases here and there can eventually accumulate into big money.
Shopping in Seoul is not exactly cheap, except for skincare products from local Korean brands, but there's a way that you can get more bang for your bucks by claiming value-added tax (VAT) refunds after shopping.
Incheon International Airport offers a tax refund service through the Self Tax Refund machines: easy to use and available in all areas of the airport, to make it easier for tourists to enjoy shopping in Korea and to save money. The Self Tax Refund machines are present in every place and in many languages, including Arabic, and while shopping in Korea many vendors help you to enjoy this service. Koreans are very cooperative. When making a payment, always remember to request a tax refund. The cashier will print a receipt and a tax refund sheet, put it into an envelope and hand it to you. You can request them to staple them together -- some of them tape them together -- for easy sorting later.
I enjoyed this service during my visit to Korea. All I had to do was offer up my passport.
When you spend more than KRW 30,000, including tax, at a store that participates in the tax refund program, you qualify for a refund.
When you get the chance, before arriving at the airport, gather all your receipts and tax refund slips. Fill out the tax refund slips, which require you to print your full name, passport number, nationality and address, and sign them at the bottom. Remember: do not throw away your receipts.
After you check in for your flight, go to the Customs Desk and present your completed Tax Free Form, passport and purchases to get a stamp on your form.
