More Scottish Food with the Outlander Kitchen Cookbook

Gyspy Stew

A few months ago I took a DNA test and after getting back the results and doing research on Ancestry.com and help from my Uncle Jim, I have found out that I'm Scottish on both sides of my family.  On my mom's side is Clan Campbell.  I don't know much about Scottish history yet but quite a few Scots moved to Ulster, Ireland for quite a while before moving on to America which mine did.  So, I guess that would make me Scots-Irish on that side.  On my dad's side is the Clan Buchanan.  Our family name was Gibson but turns out that they were a sept of the Clan Buchanan.




Anyone that knows me knows I am passionate about my ancestry and I also love to cook.  I've been having the best time diving into Scottish food.  I have to tell you that it is fabulous!  These recipes although I'm not too sure how traditional they are, they all were absolutely wonderful.  They come out of the cookbook "Outlander Kitchen".  Yes, it's based on the Starz series "Outlander" which I love.  I totally recommend this cookbook!  The recipes can be found here.....  Outlander Kitchen Cookbook.

The Gypsy Stew was the best I've ever made.  I've never used turnip, rutabaga, leeks and kale in a stew before.  Now it's the only stew I will make.  I served it with a wonderful soda bread that I will get to later...........

Fiona's Cinnamon Scones

I've always wanted to be fabulous at making scones.  Well....now I am thanks to Fiona's Cinnamon Scone recipe.  They were crispy on the outside and sweet and tender on the inside.  I opted to put turbinado sugar on top instead of icing.   Absolutely delish!

Jam Tarts

The jam tarts are on the cover of the Outlander Kitchen Cookbook.  They are so fun to make and take very little effort using a food processor to make the dough.  I made strawberry, apricot and lemon curd tarts.  My family ate them up so fast!  This would make a great fast dessert for any occasion.  

Ginger-Nut Biscuits

The final thing I've made (although definitely NOT the last) out of this amazing cookbook are the Ginger-Nut Biscuits.  I wasn't sure how my kids would like them but they are so subtle in flavor everyone loved them.  My daughter said it was like a ginger snickerdoodle.  That pretty much sums it up.  They are lovely and soft with some gentle spices in the background.  Wonderful with a hot tea or coffee.

Next I have my eyes on the Shepherd's pie and the Scottish meat pies.
