KOREAN MUSIC: MBC’s “I AM a Singer” Season 2 (9)

Naneun Gasuda (나는 가수다) or NAGASU (나가수)

Clockwise from top left: Ha Hyunwoo (Guckkasten), Jeong In,
Lee Sooyoung, Lee Eunmi, Lee Younghyun, and Seo Muntak

The singers were on a mission to sing foreign songs for the first night of the July NAGASU round (7/1/2012) and here's a list of six songs selected by them (in the order they were performed):

1.  Jeong In: "Calling You" (Original version by Jevetta Steele, 1987)
2.  Guckkasten: "The Saddest Thing" (Original version by Melanie Safka, 1973)
3.  Lee Sooyoung: "Donde Voy" (Where I Go, Original version by Tish Hinojosa, 1989)
4.  Seo Muntak: "Black Dog" (Original version by Led Zeppelin, 1971)
5.  Lee Eunmi: "Love Hurts" (Original version by Nazareth, 1976)
6.  Lee Younghyun: "I Will Always Love You" (Original version by Whitney Houston, 1992)

Now, I'll upload their videos in the order their performance so why don't you rank them? Please try not be bothered by their English as it's not their native tongue.  :)

So....... who's your favorite?  On the show, Lee Younghyun was announced to be the winner; Lee Eunmi and Guckkasten also made the top three along with her.  I personally loved Guckkasten's rendition of Safka's "The Saddest Thing" the most. I was especially impressed by how they rearranged the song, using traditional Korean string instruments Ajaeng (아쟁) and Gayagem (가야금), and by how Ha Hyunwoo's voice sounded exactly like Ajaeng itself.  I got goosebumps hearing him sing.

Lee Eunmi was a distant runner-up (methinks).  Lee said she would cover Nazareth's original version of "Love Hurts" but I think she was rather inspired by Heart's1995 cover of the song than Nazareth's.  Maybe it's because I've really cherished Nazareth's original version but Lee's singing seemed too much over the top.

Personally, I thought Seo Muntak, one of the pioneering Korean female rockers, would be a great new addition to the show.  Because I had built my expectation so high, the disappointment was too big; her singing was all about screaming and shouting, nothing close to Robert Plant's funny, playful, sensuous, and sexy "Black Dog."
