Long Boy Burgers

When I first saw these long boy burgers
over at Sunshine and Bones I knew I would
love them.  That's because I've used the
techinque before.  Do you remember my
Korean Open-Face burgers?  Here's a pic
to remind you...

In my Korean Open-Face burgers I mix the
flavors of bulgogi (soy sauce, sesame oil,
garlic, green onions, etc) in the hamburger
meat and spread the raw meat mixture on
buns, sprinkle with sesame seeds and bake
for about 20 minutes or until the meat
reaches a temperature of 165 degrees.

The Long Boy Burgers are made the same way
but are a little more like meatloaf. The best
part is you can top them with anything.  I
opted for barbeque sauce on some and Thai
sweet chili sauce on the others.  They both
where terrific!  So flavorful!  You can even
make them more like meatloaf and top them
with a mixture of ketchup, dry mustard and
brown sugar.  Then you get to top that with
ooey gooey melty cheese.  Oh my...doesn't
that just make you start to drool?

Long Boy Burgers

adapted from Sunshine and Bones

4-6 Sub rolls, split in half lengthwise
1 1/4 cup cornflakes, crushed
1/2 small onion, minced
1/2 cup whole or lowfat milk
6 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon minced fresh thyme
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 large egg, lightly beaten
Salt and pepper
2 pounds 90% lean ground beef
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Topping: (choose one) Ketchup, Barbeque sauce,
Thai Sweet Chili Sauce

Heat oven to 450 degrees.

1. Broil rolls, cut side up, on a baking sheet

until golden and crisp.

2. Combine cornflakes, onion, milk, 6 tablespoons
ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, garlic powder,
egg, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon pepper in
large bowl. Add meat and knead gently until well
combined.

3. Top toasted rolls evenly with meat mixture,

spreading meat to edges of rolls. Brush top of
meat mixture with topping of your choice and
bake until meat registers 160 degrees, 20-25
minutes. Top burgers with cheese and continue
to bake until cheese melts, 2-3 minutes.

Sandwiches like this are a great weeknight
meal!   They are so fast to throw together and
would be great for the upcoming football season.
Long boy burgers with some chips, dips and some
dessert....that sounds like a game night I'd
like to attend!
