Loose meat Cheeseburgers with Caramelized Onion

I'm really excited about this recipe!  It's such a fun easy take on a cheeseburger.  My family just goes crazy for these things and they are much easier to make and I don't have to stand over a hot grill or anything.   I tweaked my regular recipe for loose meat sandwiches in this post and came up with this little baby!
They start with mega flavor from the caramelized onions then after the beef is cooked I put the ketchup and mustard right in the meat.  That keeps them nice and moist. Then you just make your burgers in a
casserole pan and stick them in the oven to heat.  They end up with a crispy bun with all that melty cheese on top.  Now normally I abhor American cheese but it kinda works here but you could use any
of your favorites, for sure.

Loose meat Cheeseburgers with Caramelized Onion

2 onions, chopped
2 lbs. ground beef
1 teaspoon garlic, chopped
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 cup ketchup, heaping
1/4 cup mustard, heaping (plus extra for top bun)
6 hamburger buns, split
24 dill pickle chips
6 slices american cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Spray a 9 x 13 pan with a non-stick cooking spray.

Cook onions over medium high heat until they start to caramelize.

Add ground beef and garlic and cook until brown and cooked through.

Stir in ketchup, mustard and black pepper and cook until mixture starts
to thicken a bit.

Place bottom buns in pan, top with meat mixture, pickles and cheese.

Put a squirt of mustard on top bun and place on top of sandwich.

Bake until cheese is melted and heated though, about 15 minutes.

Loose meats are a great combination of two family favorites......sloppy joes and hamburgers.  I don't know a kid big or little who wouldn't like that!  Make this for your family for dinner and I guarantee they will gobble them up.   Mine sure did!
